MENDOTA HEIGHTS, MN—Troops far from home and in dangerous places in the Middle East are getting a morale boost in the coming weeks thanks to a Minnesota based company. The employees of Manna Freight Systems, Inc., headquartered in metro Minneapolis/St. Paul, have raised more than $5,000 this year, all of which will go toward fulfilling the requests of military units for needed supplies from home.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this effort,” said President and CEO Alan J. Meehan. “Our employees come up with creative and fun ways to challenge each other and raise 100 percent of the funds in-house and they’ve been outdoing themselves every year since we started back in 2005.

Meehan said the fundraisers have included an executive dunk tank, a skip day (during which employees skipped rather than walked), a sumo wrestling event, bag toss, bake sales, gift basket raffles, chili luncheons,  LEGO building contest, foosball and ping pong challenges, and many other events big and small.

“We adopt forward operating units from the Anysoldier.com website,” Meehan said. “Then we try our best to fulfill their requests for snacks, blankets, sheets, games, videos, sun glasses, sometimes tactical gear, and hygiene items,”  he said. All funds raised by employees are used for this purpose and once all the requests are met, any remaining funds are donated to a charity that supports US veterans. Meehan said the company pays the cost of shipping items, often hundreds of pounds, to their final destinations.

“A number of veterans work here and we value the experiences they’ve picked up while out defending the country,” Meehan said.  “This is our opportunity to show both active duty people and returning veterans that we honor their service.
